Saturday, June 8th: Stonehenge and Winchester

Stonehenge

The first side trip we joined in on with a larger group of British Studies students across various departments was a day trip out to Stonehenge and Winchester. Obviously Stonehenge is crazy old, but both sites are well outside London, making this our third day in a row of seeing new England territory away from bustling London. I was most looking forward to seeing the English countryside on a classically English day - cloudy and raining - but also to seeing Jane Austen's final resting place. I'd been told Winchester was wonderful.

Stonehenge did not disappoint - we got there early enough to just beat the first rush of people making the park their first Saturday outing, and the nearby sheep in the surrounding fields complemented the weather vibes beautifully.

We did not unfortunately spend the extra pounds to go inside the cathedral, which of course I regret, but a walk around the grounds and perimeter of the church was so peaceful and gave our eyes plenty to see.

We continued our leisurely stroll around town to locate the house Jane Austen died in, and to visit the ruins of Wolvesey Castle, before heading back to the coach to return to London.
